New photo of below

This was taken outside with image lying down. The greys are a little blue. Looking at the white paper it rests on, around the edges of the image, you can see blue not white. One of these days I'll learn . . patience and practice and referring to the photography book . . maybe by the end of my photo class! I'm still going to keep trying.

  1. Very nice, it reminds me of the old TV test patterns. I'm showing my age.

Photographing your own art is difficult at best. I am guessing you are using a digital camera, if so they tend to be a little contrasty. Regular florescent lights are the worst. Most digital cameras have an automatic white balance that tries to correct for this but the image usually still suffers. shooting outside in open shade is better, you get even light but the blue sky contributes a blue cast and direct sunlight washes out the colors. In a perfect world you would use color balanced strobes on either side of the painting to avoid glare. But they are very expensive. Never mix florescent with tungsten,it confuses the white balance. An inexpensive solution is to use the new daylight florescent bulbs, floods that fit in clip on light fixtures. What saves me is Photoshop. It allows me to adjust color balance and contrast to match the original. Hope this helps.

  3. Thank you William & brbulka.g for visiting here.

William: Yes, I remember the old TV test patterns. I always liked them! And thank you SO much for the camera/lighting info. I was learning just last week in photo class about the differences in light. I have photoshop, but, alas, am so technically challenged, I know I will have to spend a LOT of time learning. This info about daylight florescent bulbs . . thank you! . . I will check into that! Your info helps a lot. I will continue to photograph this image, as I'm not happy with it. Maybe I'll try automatic setting.

Brbulka.g: I really appreciate your kind words. Getting an image I like is a challenge for me. Learning not to be frustrated when I don't is an ongoing process of personal growth for me. :-)
